A chachen is used as a platform for the teapot while preparing gongfu tea. Overflow tea and water drain into the chachen. An alternative arrangement is to use a bowl-shaped chachuan (tea boat) and teapot stand. For illustration of chachen use, see the section on brewing your tea.
